Phantom: Co-Opting Linux Processes for High-Performance Network Simulation

I present Phantom, a new tool that runs unmodified applications as Linux processes within a discrete-event network simulator. By synthesizing efficient process control and system call interposition, Phantom overcomes the inefficiency of current tools. Our evaluation shows it is significantly faster than Shadow, NS-3, and gRaIL in large-scale benchmarks while maintaining comparable performance in complex network simulations.

In Phantom, a discrete-event network simulator directly executes unmodified applications as Linux processes and innovatively synthesizes efficient process control to co-opt the processes into the simulation environment.
