MIT Study: EVs Cut Emissions and Save Costs for Most US Drivers

We analyzed thousands of US zip codes to compare electric and gas vehicles, factoring in climate, driving habits, and local electricity mixes. Our findings show that EVs reduce emissions by 40 to 60 percent in most areas and remain cost-competitive without tax credits. Individual driving behaviors matter as much as regional grid factors, and even cold climates do not significantly negate these environmental benefits.

Rather than simply asking, 'Are EVs better?', this paper helps answer 'better for whom, and under what conditions?'
